It’s said that Australians handle adversary better than we
handle good fortune.
If you put an Aussie up against a struggle, if you throw
hardship in front of them, they’ll roll up their sleeves, as will their mates,
and they’ll all pitch in and beat that problem down until it’s manageable.
But a windfall? Not so much. We might squander it, we might become
paranoid about losing it, whatever happens, we can’t just accept it and be
happy.
I didn’t buy that. I thought it was down to individual human
nature.
Then I got a fortune among the suddenly destitute.
