Mixed Race

The moment after she spat that word out was the worst I’d experienced. Eventually I regained use of my limbs and spun around, looking to stop my wife from doing something silly. But she just stood there, her eyes slightly narrowed, as she stared at my grandmother.

I tried to stammer out an apology, but she raised a single finger in my direction, and I fell silent, before closing my eyes and stepping back.

My wife leaned down and took advantage of my grandmother’s infirmity to whisper something into her ear.

Neither of them ever told me what was said.
