The Humans called them Boomerangs, after an ancient weapon of their planet that was the same rough shape as the drones, and like the Drones they moved in long circular loops.
But this led the Humans to assume that they were like their weapons, that their launch point has to be somewhere on the loop. They ignored the older races' repeated explanation that they'd existed for aeons, and they searched for their origins.
This direct led to the return of the Ancient Evil that destroyed every trace of their people.
They'd call that ironic, if any of them still existed.
