The universe doesn’t seem to like anyone trying to destroy
it.
Whenever someone develops a spell or artefact that could
unmake existence, it always seems to overload or have some other fatal flaw, invariably
taking out the person using it. If there’s no way it can fail, it does.
So, twisted-logically, if you make a device that can erase
everything, then put in a tiny self-destruct mechanism that requires a nondescript
key that you then bury halfway round the world, that should satisfy the
universe. And really, what are the odds it’ll be found and used?
Greater than zero.
