Susan came to me a few months into the relationship, tears
streaming down her cheeks. They had a fight, a huge one, over money, at least
at first. She wanted, needed, to hear some good advice, so I told her, ‘A relationship
is like metal. To forge it, you must put it in the fire,’ then bit my tongue.
It was about a year later that she came back, tears now
streaming down onto her swollen belly, when I had to tell her the other part of
it.
‘But it does you no good to stand around in the flames…’
