There was a story about the forest that was told to small children when they were naughty, and to visitors to the town pub when they were drunk. The details were slightly different depending on the narrator, but they all agreed that there was an evil witch in the middle of the forest just waiting to snatch up anyone who wandered into the forest, but especially children left there by parents. She would take them home and cook them up and eat their bones.
Total nonsense of course. She merely used their flesh in her spells to keep her alive.
