Time Dilation

The closer you get to the speed of light, the slower time impacts on you. This has been known about for centuries, but it was only after the creation of the hyperfusion drive that it became a useful fact. Once Humanity was able to reach near-lightspeed, the time it would take ships to reach other systems became feasible, with cryopods.

The best of us were put into ships and began the long journeys to endure our survival.

When they arrived and awoke to find the colonies the remainders set up once we developed post-lightspeed, they took some time to adjust.
