The Dwarves mined metals but needed food. The Humans wanted
the metals and had the food. But neither side trusted the other, thus Elves acted
as third parties, taking food and metal back and forth between the two, for a
share in both the food and the metal.
As a half-elf, I dealt mostly with the Humans. They seemed
content enough with the deal, and they would always answer my questions when I
was curious about their society.
But I probably shouldn’t have asked them why they didn’t
just kill the dwarves and take the mines. Hadn’t occurred to them…
