Two beats, pause, three beats, pause, repeat.
It was being broadcast on a subspace frequency not used by
any known race or fleet, but the regularity of it caused it to be logged to be
checked, eventually.
A few subyears after it was first picked up, a passing vessel
found a station, empty for millennia, only now drifting close enough to a star
to absorb power.
And to start sending out what was the universal signal to
stay far away, before what was on board wiped all life out the first time round
in two subyears.
Three subyears this time.
