Letter From A Coward At War

My Darling Susan:

I have precious little time to write to you, as I must go and lay out the plans for tomorrow to my brigadier generals in a moment. They have given me a brigade for my actions in the battle last week, my love.

I do not expect you to understand me any more than you did when I left you weeping last Spring, but my cowardice is what is driving me, and what will bring me back home.

Death I’m afraid of, but letting down my men scares me more.

Colonel George McNeal
Confederate Army Of Mobile
