Data transfers through the vortex were limited to half a second long, or else they degraded too much, and they took three months to emerge on the other side. The computers were supposed to compress data and such so that we got maximum use of the time.
But after three data packages in a row that were complete junk, almost completed degraded, I finally just sent a barely compressed audio file, asking for an explanation about what was going on.
I got one, when the alien ship came through and opened fire, now that they got a message they understood.
