They both took part in the same open mic contest to begin their careers. They both lost to the fat guy telling blue jokes.
They were never friends, but as they worked on their routines and honed their abilities, they often shared a stage, sometimes he would open for her, sometimes she opened for him, usually they both opened for someone else.
But they both worked equally hard, and ended up getting picked up by agents at the same time, moving into movies simultaneously, getting nominated the same year.
And both losing to a veteran character acting doing blue jokes.
